This is what happens when you lose the feeling in your fingers while working out in the cold – you drop your painting and it lands upside down in the dirt. Just like a piece of buttered toast!
But here is a secret: you can rescue it. You just have to wait until the paint has dried and then pick off the gunk. And paint over whatever you can't pick off.
This not the first time I've dropped a painting and it certainly won't be the last.
If you look at the surface of my plein air work closely enough, you will find a lot of bugs – or more accurately, a lot of bit and pieces of bugs –- in my paint. They committed suicide as I worked. I usually leave them in for those future conservators who might have a minor in entomology . . .
Kind of an in-joke . . .
